If you like to splash in the water whether it is jumping in, floating on, or casting into Cranbrook and the East Kootenays has a myriad of lakes, rivers and creeks for all kinds of water activities and all levels of experience.

The provincial parks in close proximity to Cranbrook have great beaches to take the family.  Within 30 minutes of Cranbrook there is Jim Smith Lake, Moyie Lake, Norbury Lake and Wasa Lake.  To find out more about these provincial parks and others check out   www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/

If you are looking for a place to put your kayak or canoe in the water St. Mary’s Lake,  Munroe Lake or Kootenay River are great for paddling.  Our local lakes are also popular for paddle boarding.  There are also some great Forestry Rec Sites such as Lazy Lake and North Star that are great for camping, fishing and paddling –  to see what is out there go to http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/

If river rafting or flyfishing are what you like to do there are several companies that offer guided experiences on the St. Mary’s River, the Bull River and many of the lakes in our area.  To find out more about fishing in the Kootenays go to www.gofishbc.com/

Learn where when and how to catch fish at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery, it is a great place to take the kids.  They are responsible for stocking 130 – 150 lakes in the Kootenays.  Their Visitor Centre has an extensive interpretative area which includes aquariums, educational models, and displays.  Guided Tours are available from May through August.  The kids will love the Learn to Fish hands on program and their children’s fishing pond and nature trail .  They also have a fishing equipment loan program if you haven’t got there own.  For more information go towww.gofishbc.com/about-us/what-we-do/fish-hatcheries/kootenay-hatchery.aspx
