Elizabeth Lake Bird Sanctuary

This 5.9 hectare wildlife sanctuary, Elizabeth Lake is a large wetland area on the west edge of Cranbrook. This sanctuary is home to many different animal species, from western painted turtles and squirrels to permanent and migratory birds. There are walking trails and viewpoints around the lake, as well as picnic tables and benches. While tempting, we ask that you not paddle on the lake; this disturbs the various animals that call these waters home, many of which raise their young in the area or are species of concern. If you visit Elizabeth Lake in the summer, you can stop at the visitor centre and talk to our volunteers – they have great information on the local area.

What birds might you see in this area? Check the East Kootenay Bird List for seasonal details.
